The data we collect describes the past. Their analysis also speaks to the past. The key questions when assessing process capability are: how can we use past data to characterize the future? How can we assess the risk that our predictions will not prove true in practice? It’s natural for a customer to want to know if a supplier is capable of delivering products that meet specifications. Beyond their fervent assurances, evidence is also needed to back up these promises. How can we prove to the customer that a process is capable of producing products that meet specific quality requirements? Process Capability Indexes can be used for this purpose.

If the data collection method for calculating Process Capability Indexes is not established in advance, supplier misuse can occur. Suppliers have many opportunities to gather data in a way that makes it look very good. Therefore, a process characterization method that is fair to both the customer and the supplier is essential.
