Eliminating waste with 5S
In a lean production system, great importance is placed on ensuring that every employee involved in production has the ability to monitor production progress at all times—the degree to which the production schedule has been met, the number of defective products, and so on. Proper work organization and the use of visual control enable immediate response to any disruptions, production delays, and shortages. One of the principles of visual control is to place all tools and parts in a clearly visible location and provide simple work instructions at each workstation, so that the status of the production system is immediately clear to all involved. The fundamental tool here is the 5S method—five Japanese terms beginning with the letter s, referring to creating a workplace suitable for visual control and lean production:
Seiri – selection – means to separation of needed and unneeded items and removing everything what is unneeded from the workplace,
Seiton – set In order – place for everything and everything In its place,
Seiso – shine – clearing workplace and tool, cleaning is also inspection,
Seiketsu – standardize – ensure uniform procedures and setups throughout the operation to promote interchangeability,
Shitsuke – sustain – make it a way of life. This means commitment. Ensure disciplined adherence to rules and procedures of 5 S to prevent backsliding. Maintaining the standards.
